Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CSA?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a direct connection between farmers and consumers that empowers everyone—consumer pays farmer, farmer grows food, consumer receives food! It is an opportunity to connect to the land that feeds you, know and trust your farmers, and engage in a local, ethical food system. With community support, farmers are able to minimize some of the risks of farming while practicing accountability to the people they serve.

What does the Dirtbaby CSA look like?

When you sign up to be a member of the Dirtbaby CSA, you are signing up to receive our own farm-grown vegetables and herbs, flower bouquets and special gifts handmade by us! Each week on designated pickup day, you’ll receive an assortment of 7-10 freshly harvested items along with a personal weekly newsletter with recipes and food stories.

Is the produce organic?

Though we are not certified organic, we adhere to and go beyond the USDA organic regulations. The Schuylkill Environmental Center for Education Community Gardens (where we grow) has been protected as a nature conservation site that bans the use of chemicals and heavy machinery since the 1960’s. Our no-till practices increase the soil’s ability to absorb water (meaning less irrigation is needed) and encourage a healthy soil biome for beneficial fungi and bacteria to thrive. We amend our soil with locally-grown compost and manage pests with physical barriers, companion planting and manually pulling bugs off plants. These practices provide us with nutrient-dense crops while responsibly stewarding land.

When and where do I pick up my weekly CSA share?

We a pick-up option at First United Methodist Church of Germantown (6001 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19144) on Wednesdays between 3pm-7pm. You are responsible for picking up your share each week (or coordinating with a friend to do so). Please see our sliding scale pricing to see what option works best for you!
